Are You A Renter? Insure Your Stuff!!
By John Voket
I need a bunch of you – specifically you renters – to take a moment and consider an important piece of advice about your stuff. If you love it, then make an extra effort to protect it.
Did you know the majority of homeowners buy insurance, but just one in three college-aged renters insures their belongings? Even more shocking: at least half of all renters fail to buy any insurance protection for their possessions.
Way too many consumers are under the mistaken impression that their landlord’s policy will cover their losses, according to the Connecticut Better Business Bureau. BBB says renter’s insurance generally covers property damage or loss caused by theft, fire, vandalism or storms. In addition, most policies include liability coverage, which protects a tenant if someone gets hurt when visiting their home or apartment.
The cost of renter’s insurance is usually lower than homeowner’s insurance because it covers only personal property and liability, not the structure. The amount of the deductible can also affect the cost of premiums.
Two types of renter’s insurance coverage are available:
- Actual cash value insurance pays to replace items up to the policy’s limits, minus a deduction for depreciation.
- Replacement cost insurance pays the actual cost of replacing your possessions, regardless of depreciation, up to the limits on the policy.
Consider the value of your possessions versus the cost of insurance - even a college student can have property worth several thousand dollars, such as computers, electronics, televisions, furniture, jewelry or small appliances.
When seeking a renter’s insurance quote:
- Determine if you have specific items of high value, you also may need a rider to cover those items. This means you'll need to list these items separately for your insurance policy.
- Ask what deductibles apply to the policy.
- Find out whether the policy will cover living costs if you are unable to occupy your current apartment or home while it is being repaired.
- Inquire about exclusions, such as types of property that would not be covered.
- Ask the insurer if they give discounts for burglar alarms, fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems or deadbolts on exterior doors.
- If you are switching insurers, be sure that the new policy is in effect before dropping the old one.
- As with any insurance product, BBB advises consumers to get estimates from several companies before buying a policy.

7 Tips for a Successful Job Search
As the economy continues to slowly improve, the job market is showing positive signs for job-seekers. While the unemployment rate dropped to 7.7 percent in November, many still find themselves unemployed and searching for new jobs, or passively looking for better opportunities.
Don't discount holiday networking
The holiday season presents numerous networking opportunities. Personal and business-related parties and charitable events are opportunities to socialize with existing contacts and make new connections in a relaxed atmosphere. Whether or not individual events are conducive to speaking about career goals and aspirations, they can open the doors to follow-up conversations. Similarly, the holidays are a good time to reconnect. Reach out to a mentor or former colleague and make plans to catch-up for an informal lunch or coffee after the New Year.
Be open to temporary or contract positions
According to the Randstad Workforce 360 Study, 67 percent of companies are currently using contingent workers in some capacity and most say that contingent workers comprise a steady or increasing percentage of their overall employee populations. The same study found that temporary and contract employees also have higher job satisfaction (86 percent) compared to permanent workers (73 percent). The most important thing you need to do is get your foot in the door. Once you are in, make yourself indispensable so they do not want to lose you.
Be strategic about your job search
When building a job search strategy, research the fastest-growing careers in your target industry. If the target industry is technology, it is helpful to know that IT spending is expected to exceed $2 trillion in 2013, according to research firm IDC. Mobile devices represent 57 percent of that growth, and accordingly, career opportunities in software development for mobile apps and enterprise application integration are expected to increase.
It's still all about who you know
There are currently 12.1 million people who are unemployed and only 3.6 million vacant positions in the United States, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many applicants rely on job board websites where hundreds of people may apply to each post. If you have specific companies in mind, dig deep into your own personal network. You'd be surprised to see the number of companies you are actually linked-in to through your second and third degree connections.
Consider working with a recruiter
Finding employment is a job within itself. Many jobs out there may not be advertised on job boards or company websites. In turn, employers put out confidential searches and tap into their recruiter networks to fill these jobs. Another benefit of using a recruiter is gaining access to their connections to HR and hiring managers, as well as intimate knowledge of the company. Recruiters coach and prep you through the entire hiring process—which is an advantage when it comes to knowing the prospective company's culture and other pertinent information not listed online.
Update LinkedIn and social network pages
LinkedIn is the online, searchable version of your resume. Most recruiters use LinkedIn to search for and reach out to potential candidates. The platform also provides employers with more information than a resume and allows them to view recommendations and possible shared connections. Before applying to any positions, clean up your other social media—many employers vet potential candidates with a social media profile review.
Double check all materials
Countless qualified candidates have been overlooked due to spelling or grammatical errors in cover letters and resumes. Another common mistake is sending out materials with the wrong company, hiring manager or position listed. Many hiring managers will automatically toss out any resume that has typos. These are avoidable mistakes. Have a peer review all materials before sending out to ensure any errors are caught.
Bonus Tip: Key Word Search
Many companies are advertising for employees online and using online sources to accept resumes. Be sure that you use key words within your resume to match the initial job posting. I have heard it said that if you don't use the same words in your application as are in the initial job posting that you are applying to you may have your resume weeded out by the online bot that picks resumes for the employer to look at.

Decorating 101: Spicing Up Your Bedroom
Does your bedroom lack excitement?
When it comes to spicing up how your bedroom looks, the folks at Ballard Designs know a lot about turning a plain old bedroom into a space bursting with visual excitement. Consider these aspects:
Color - Since your bedroom is a place for repose, choose three colors that work well together and stick to the “60-30-10 color principle” - 60 percent dominant color, 30 percent secondary color and 10 percent accent color. For your dominant color, think soothing neutrals - a lighter or softer shade of a color whether it’s sand, green, gray or blue - that has a touch of earth tone in it.
Not in the mood to paint? Add color with bedding, wall décor and other accents.
Use bedding to highlight your secondary color with lighter or darker shades and varying textures of fabric, or limit the palette to two contrasting patterns and a solid in sheets, duvet and shams. Reserve bold hues and playful patterns for accent pillows, a bedside throw rug, artwork, vases and lampshades that support primary and secondary colors.
And don’t forget layering - a key decorating practice that creates the perfect combination of comfort, warmth and texture. You’ll find that most bedroom decorating ideas are in some way related to creating layers around the room.
Ballard Designs recommends considering these four features of your bedroom when layering:Bedding – Sheets, a soft blanket, bedspread, quilt or duvet, along with a throw and pillows in different shapes and sizes are all building blocks that help create an inviting, sumptuous bed. Even a headboard fits in the mix and adds to the overall look, especially if it’s upholstered.
Windows – A simple shade or bamboo blinds under drapes create a soft, layered look while controlling the amount of light in your room.
Flooring – A wool or cotton rug breaks up the expanse of wood flooring or covers up old carpeting while adding an extra layer of color and warmth.
Lighting – Create gentle, restful lighting from multiple light sources. A floor lamp or pair of sconces adds ambient lighting, a bedside lamp provides task lighting for reading and an overhead fixture bathes the room in light when needed.

Tips to Navigate 2012 W-2 and 1099 Changes
Every year brings with it new changes related to W-2 and 1099 forms and reporting requirements. Due to the government's increasing focus on the proverbial tax gap, it's more important than ever for small businesses to understand the changing W-2 and 1099 reporting environment.
Here are some of the key changes that will affect small business this year.
W-2 Form Changes and New Additions
The reduced rate of 4.2 percent for social security tax withholding (for employees only) is extended for wage payments made in 2012. Also new in tax year 2012, compensation of $600 or more that is paid to H-2A visa agricultural workers must be reported on Form W-2 if the worker furnishes a valid taxpayer identification number. If the worker does not furnish a valid taxpayer identification number, report the payments on Form 1099-MISC.
In addition to the above W-2 form changes, there are several specific form updates to various 1098 and 1099 forms. Below are several of the more prominent changes for 2012:
- Filers of Forms 1098 (except 1098-C), 1099, and 5498 may truncate a recipient's social security number, individual taxpayer identification number, or adoption taxpayer identification number on paper payee statements for tax year 2012.
- Form 1098: Mortgage insurance premiums paid or accrued after December 31, 2011, are no longer eligible to be treated as interest paid by the payer/borrower.
- Form 1099-B: New boxes have been added to Form 1099-B for reporting the stock or other symbol, quantity sold, whether basis is being reported to the IRS, and state income tax withheld. Other boxes on the form have been moved or renumbered. Brokers must also report on Form 1099-B sales of covered securities by an S corporation if the S corporation acquired the covered securities after 2011.
- Form 1099-C: Box 6 is now titled Identifiable Event Code and requires the entry of a code for the identifiable event. For 2012, all codes are optional except for Code A – Bankruptcy.
- Form 1099-DIV: Exempt-interest dividends from a mutual fund or other regulated investment company are now reported on Form 1099-DIV. Those amounts will no longer be reported on Form 1099-INT. Boxes 12 through 14 have also been added to Form 1099-DIV to report state income tax withheld.
- Form 1099-INT: Exempt-interest dividends from a mutual fund or other regulated investment company (RIC) are no longer reported on Form 1099-INT. Those amounts will now be reported on Form 1099-DIV. Boxes 11 through 13 have also been added to Form 1099-INT to report state income tax withheld.
- Form 1099-MISC: Compensation of $600 or more paid in a calendar year to an H-2A visa agricultural worker and any backup withholding must be reported on Form 1099-MISC if the worker fails to provide the employer with a taxpayer identification number. If the worker does furnish a valid taxpayer identification number, report the payments on Form W-2.
Below are some important dates for filers to remember as they enter tax season:
- January 31, 2013 – Due date to send most 1099s and Copies B, 2, and C of form W-2 to each recipient/employee
- February 28, 2013 – Due date to send Copy A of form W-2 to the Social Security Administration (SSA) and form1099 to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on paper
- April 1, 2013 – Due date to send copy A of form W-2 to SSA and form 1099 to IRS electronically (e-file)

How to Choose a Cell Phone Service Plan
Are you buying a cell phone service plan? How about giving one as a gift this holiday season? Since smartphones require a data plan for access to the Internet and many applications, the gift of a service plan would enable your recipient to use the phone right away. If you go this route, first figure out how much data the phone recipient will be using every month. Also, keep in mind if you recycle a phone you'll need to know what your service provider's policies are. The second time my son's cell phone went through the wash we decided we didn't want to pay yet another $50 deductible so we gave him an old blackberry that we had been using. His old phone didn't require a data plan but the moment the blackberry was activated on our plan a data plan was added and even though he didn't use the data plan it could not be removed because of the type of phone he had.
According to a September, 2012 NPD Connected Intelligence study, consumers are using more data than ever before. Android smartphone users download an average of 870 MB of data per month on cellular networks and about 2.5 GB per month on Wi-Fi networks. So what does that really mean? For context, with approximately one gigabyte (GB) of data, you could do one of the following tasks: view 1,000 web pages, send or receive 50,000 emails without attachments, stream 33 hours of music, post 2,800 pictures to Facebook, or watch 8+ hours of video on YouTube.
Knowing how the phone recipient will use it not only helps you find the right device, but the right data plan as well. Ask yourself:
- How often will they check email on the device each day?
- How often will they surf the web or check their social network?
- How often will they share photos and documents?
- How often will they download games, apps and music?
- How often will they stream music and videos?
Compare service options to get the most for your money. Some plans offer a limited number of texts or data usage and charge hefty overage fees. Other plans include unlimited talk, text and data for multiple phone lines for a reasonable monthly fee.
In addition to contract plans, you can also consider a pre-paid plan. But, if you are using your cell phone bill as a way to build your credit, you'll want to go with a contract plan.

Dine Safely this Thanksgiving - Turkey Tips
Many people have ceased to cook our stuffing inside our birds, like grandma used to do it. But what are some other food safety tips you can follow? The National Restaurant Association (NRA) estimates that more than 30 million Americans enlist the help of restaurants for their Thanksgiving feast by dining out or using takeout, but cooking at home remains popular during this holiday. Preparing that meal safely will ensure an enjoyable holiday with family and friends, so the experts at the NRA offer food safety tips for holiday meals:
Thaw your turkey in the fridge. While you can thaw a frozen turkey under running water or in the microwave, the best way is in the refrigerator overnight (or longer). Be sure to follow the instructions on the package.
Store raw turkey away from ready-to-eat food. Make sure your raw turkey is covered and stored in a leak-proof container on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. You want to keep it away from foods that are ready to eat, such as desserts and salads, to avoid the risk of cross-contamination.
Clean and sanitize your sink and counters. After rinsing your raw turkey thoroughly, properly clean and sanitize the sink and surrounding area before starting to prepare any other food.
Cook your turkey to safe internal temperature. Use a properly calibrated meat thermometer to check that your turkey has reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Insert the thermometer to the dimple on the stem in the thickest part of the breast and thigh for accurate readings.
Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Prep salads, cranberries and other colds items first and store them in the fridge until ready to serve. Then prep your hot dishes closer to serving time so they stay hot. Keep all food items outside the "temperature danger zone" (41 to 135 degrees) as much as possible.
Safely reheat leftovers. Whether from a meal prepared at home or picked up from a restaurant, leftovers are part of the holiday tradition. Store each dish separately in clean, sealable, leak-proof containers and reheat to 165 degrees when you're ready to enjoy round two of your Thanksgiving meal.
